OUR 8TH ANNIVERSARY…

This photo best captures how we feel about being married.

Eight years ago, Amy and I stood before God, family, and friends to pledge our everlasting love for each other. On the day you get married, you never really know how it’s all going to be. People will sit you down, explaining to you the “do’s and don’t’s of marriage.” You read books and even attend premarital counseling. All are helpful, for sure. But nothing and no one can really prepare you for marriage like God. Definitely no one can preserve your marriage but Him!

In the past eight years, Amy and I have fallen more in love with each other. Even though she has gotten to known me more, her love continues to grow. One can be easily annoyed by all the “organization” (I mean, really, do we have to color coordinate the way we hang shirts in the closet?), instead God has taught me that this trait is important in our home. We are in awe daily of how much God can love through us, and that truly is the bottom line. You can love your spouse with your own power and you may make it. But when you love someone through God’s power, it is an unselfish, unconditonal, and unending love- it is a love that lasts. It is a love that bears all things. It is patient, kind, and humble. This love is not easily angered but endures the tests of life. This love comes only from God!

Eight years ago, we thought we knew what lay ahead. We thought we could anticipate all that God would do in our marriage and our ministry. Boy, were we so wrong! Not in the way that God did not grow our love and bless our work but rather in the measure He grew and blessed us.

Today we stand as a testimony of what God can do with two friends, who first love God, then learn to love one another. It reminds me of the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 37:4, “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” As single adults, graduated from Bible college, we chose not to be bitter about not being married. We chose not to be desperate. We chose not to be pressured into relationships. We chose, instead, to throw ourselves at the Lord’s service and seek daily to draw closer to Him. The closer we got to the Lord, the happier we became and as God allowed our paths to cross one with another, the will of God was clear and our desires were met.

P.S. If you click on our photo gallery, you’ll find photos from our wedding day. As we were unpacking, we found a CD full of wedding pictures and decided to share it with you. Enjoy!
